Information on Herpes in the Mouth

If you have been diagnosed with herpes in the mouth and are wondering that means, then perhaps you already know of this ailment by one of its’ other names.  Herpes in the mouth is also commonly referred to as a cold sore or fever blister.  They earned these names because they commonly appear when the body is trying to fight off colds and other common illnesses.

If you have herpes in the mouth, you will most likely start to notice that a distinctive tingling sensation occurs around your mouth and lips before a sore appears.  This sensation can last from a few hours to a few days, but it will most likely be followed by a cold sore outbreak.  The blister that develops is unsightly, and will form a yellow crust before falling off.  As long as you do not pick at it, it won’t leave a scar.

Even without treatment, an outbreak of herpes in the mouth should clear up within 2 weeks.  However, there are numerous treatments available that will reduce discomfort and speed up healing.  These cold sore treatments are available over the counter at your local drug store, or by prescription through your primary care physician.  It should be clear, however, that as of this time there is no cure for herpes in the mouth so part of any treatment plan should be to prevent the spread of herpes in the mouth to those you come in contact with, particularly children as they are quite susceptible to the virus.

Certainly, getting herpes in the mouth does not make anyone happy.  But, the silver lining is that there are numerous treatments available, and often there is a large span of time between outbreaks.
